Mechanism of Action:To inhibit DNA gyrase, which is essential for the synthesis of double-stranded breaks (dSBs), ciprofloxacin can prevent them from occurring. This is achieved through binding to the active site of the enzyme, leading to the formation of double-stranded breaks. It is important to note that ciprofloxacin inhibits the replication of viral DNA in the presence of bacterial cells and viral DNA in the presence of viral DNA. Consequently, it is most effective against infections caused by bacteria.

Introduction

Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, used in the treatment of various bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections (UTIs) and gastrointestinal infections. It is often prescribed for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, such as gram-positive bacteria, including Enterobacter, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, and others. However, it has a broader spectrum of activity, meaning it can be used to treat a wide range of bacterial pathogens. Ciprofloxacin belongs to the quinolone antibacterial drug class and is often used in combination with other antibacterial drugs such as erythromycin or clarithromycin to treat bacterial infections.

Ciprofloxacin is available in various forms, including oral tablets, oral suspension, and topical preparations. The dosage and duration of treatment for UTIs, such as pyelonephritis and acute bacterial pyelonephritis, depend on the type and severity of the infection. It is essential to take the medication exactly as prescribed and complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve. It is recommended to avoid alcohol consumption while taking ciprofloxacin, as it can reduce the efficacy of the medication.

The safety and effectiveness of ciprofloxacin have been established in studies that compared it to other antibiotics used for urinary tract infections and were used to treat UTIs in children and adults. The safety and effectiveness of ciprofloxacin for the treatment of pyelonephritis have also been reported in adults and adolescents from six European countries. In those studies, the dose of ciprofloxacin was adjusted as needed to control acute pyelonephritis symptoms. However, these studies varied, and no clear answer has been found for the duration of treatment and for the presence of pyelonephritis. In particular, no specific duration of treatment or dose of ciprofloxacin has been determined.

In the present study, a total of 79 patients with pyelonephritis and pyelonephritis plus other bacterial infections were enrolled into a prospective cohort study. The patients were randomly assigned to receive ciprofloxacin 250 mg twice daily for a period of 12 weeks or to receive placebo (injection form) for the same period. At the end of the 12-week study, a standardized medical record review was conducted and data were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS, version 24.0. A p value of <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.
